Coming into the 2026-2027 school year, Rhode Island has made the decision to implement a new cell phone law in schools. This will create a big change in how schools, students, and teachers go through their days. The bill requires all public schools to adopt policies prohibiting student access to personal electronic devices throughout the entire school day. This includes cell phones and smart watches. This law will officially take effect starting on August, 1st, 2026. It will target the ideas of better social interactions within students, as well as helping students keep focus on their academics.
After having the privilege to speak to representative Julie Casimiro, I got to understand and learn more about what exactly went into the signing of the law. She states “I saw first hand the problems that cell phones caused.” After she had been a substitute teacher for another nearby high school, she saw the behind the scenes of what actually happened in schools and how the phones affected the school lives of students. She witnessed the distractions, bullying, and anxiety. These things truly helped give her a reasoning and true understanding of why cell phones need to be taken out of the classroom. She feels that the overall well being of schools throughout the state will be an all around better environment for students, teachers, staff, and even for parents to feel more comfortable when sending their children to school.
Many students have shown concern about being able to have communication and contact with their parents/guardians throughout the day. Representative Casimiro explained that if parents need contact with a student during the day, they can call the school. Same goes for students, if you need to call home, just going to the office to make a quick call works just as well. If a student feels sick, instead of relying on texting their parents first, students should just go to the nurse and from there they would call home. Students should not feel the need to have constant communication with their parents throughout the whole day and should be focused on becoming more independent and less reliant on the phones.
Now there are some major benefits that this phone law will implement. Students will have less distractions throughout the day and not have to worry about whether or not they got a text or missed a post from a celebrity. Instead, this will help the students be more attentive and concentrated in their classes. Another benefit is the socialization skills that students will gain. Instead of students having their heads buried in their phones, they will need to rely on actual socialization between each other. This will create a more cohesive environment for students, when teens finally get the chance to socialize with each other. There will most likely be less online drama and problems between students that carry into the building.
While the new phone law has many benefits, it will be an adjustment for students, but it will allow schools to foster better social interactions and improve students’ focus on academics.
