On November 4, 2025, Democratic Socialist Zohran K. Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election. Going against for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Curtis Sliwa, who ran as a Republican, Mamdani took 50.4% of the votes, while Cuomo took 41.6% and Sliwa took 7.1%.
Before this historical election, Mamdani would firstly represent a district in Queens when he entered the mayoral race last year. He then moved onto the primaries, where Mamdani faced Cuomo before he entered as an independent into the mayoral election (beforehand, he was entered as a Democrat against Mamdani). Mamdani won the June Democratic Primary by 12 percentage points, making him become one of the most popular politicians along the journey to the mayoral election.
Now, why is Mamdani being elected into office so significant? There are multiple reasons behind it: firstly, he is the first Muslim and person of South Asian descent to hold the position of New York City Mayor EVER. Secondly, he is the youngest in over a century to hold the position of mayor. However, the biggest factor of Mamdani was how he was able to draw new voters in and to get people to the polls. He would do this through focusing on registering new voters, as well as promoting his message and mission all throughout social media, primarily on TikTok. This, in turn, brought young voters and others to the polls, making this one of the biggest turn outs for voting in New York City. Ultimately, his success of promoting himself was what led him to victory over the other fierce competitors. When Sage Butz was asked why Mamdani was so significant, she responded by saying, “I think he is what the city needs after Cuomo.”
In total, Mamdani is here to make a significant change to life in New York City, and people cannot wait to see what he does over the course of his time as mayor.
