Students at Tiverton High School are working toward a distinction that recognizes more than just graduation requirements. The Seal of Biliteracy is awarded by the Rhode Island Department of Education to recognize those who demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one additional language.
The Seal is placed on a student’s diploma and transcripts, signaling to colleges and employers that the graduate has achieved a high level of skill in reading, writing, speaking and listening in two languages. Teachers that teach languages make sure to fully prepare students to take the Seal of Biliteracy test throughout the years of taking the language.
“By the time it’s Spanish 4 [or Portuguese] they’re ready for the Seal of Biliteracy. I think it’s an important piece because it shows they’re proficient in that language whether it’s Spanish or Portuguese” says Spanish teacher Jena Rossignol. All teachers in the language department make it clear that they believe taking a language class is worth the effort.
The language courses Spanish and Portuguese help prepare students for the required assessments, while also building real-world communication skills. Administrators also note that earning the Seal strengthens college applications and is an overall strong skill to have when looking into career opportunities.
Frances Melo, a Portuguese and Spanish teacher at THS, expresses that language can often be difficult, however it is worth having the skill and overall a great opportunity to expand your knowledge. “They test the four different areas of language and [students] need to be able to speak outside of the box. Outside the box is going to pass” declared Ms. Melo.
As more students pursue multilingual achievement, the Seal of Biliteracy continues to serve as both an academic honor and a meaningful step forward to success.
