It’s October, which means that school spirit is high. Every October, Tiverton High School hosts a Homecoming dance, but for THS it is more than just a dance. Every year leading up to the dance, the school has a spirit week filled with creative themes and fun games. This year’s spirit week was one for the history books with the school going all out!
Themes:
The themes this year were super creative and different than years past. Monday was Twin Day, Tuesday was Meme/Character day, Wednesday was class theme (Funky Freshman, Sleepy Sophomores, Jersey Juniors, and Senior Citizens), Thursday was Teen Beach Movie day (Bikers vs. Surfers), and Friday was School Colors. Monday, people dressed up as blind mice, frat boys, and so many more! Tuesday, people dressed up as the Lorax, Smurfs, Ninja Turtles, and a lot of obscure memes. After talking to students, most people agreed that class theme day was their favorite and they like that the senior citizens went all out. The seniors that day brought in walkers and wheelchairs, and some even went far enough to buy a fat suit to make themselves look older. Although the other classes were not as spirited as the seniors, most people agree that it was the best theme. Thursday’s theme was surfer vs. bikers, which most people agreed was the worst theme, leaving many people confused on what to do with the theme. Even though people disagree over the best and worst theme of the week, everyone agreed that the school color theme was a good theme that really gave the best outlook of the week with pretty much everyone in the school participating. The theme Friday didn’t just end after school; it was carried over to the football game and bonfire later that night, creating a sea of maroon in the stands.
Games:
Besides just having a fun theme every day, the student council hosts a class competition with a game after school every day. The games played this year were: Hungry, Hungry Hippos, water relay, potato sack race, and our annual pie-eating contest and powderpuff game. The competition this year was tight with a back-and-forth battle between the seniors and juniors that went on all week. The games ended with powderpuff; juniors beat the freshman, seniors beat the sophomores, and in the final round, the juniors beat the seniors, ending the competition with the Juniors taking the crown for the whole week.
Football:
Friday night, the school also hosts a homecoming football game where there is food, games, and fire. The Tigers took on Exeter-West Greenwich High School in a challenging game where the Tigers put up a fight, ending the game at 13-16 with the Tigers unfortunately losing. During halftime, the Homecoming King and Queen were announced, the homecoming king being Alex Monkevicz and the queen being Carly Sousa. Lastly, after the game, there was a bonfire where people could go and warm up with their friends and family.
Homecoming is not just about a dance for THS; it is about community and being together while having fun. This year definitely showcased that by bringing each class together with the themes, and the community together with the game and fire.
