On November 8, singer/songwriter Chappell Roan made an appearance at the 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, to present Cindi Lauper’s induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In her touching speech, she mentions how, in the music industry “The best art comes from the most authentic people” and “When artists stay true to themselves, even when some people say they’re too much … that honesty becomes their greatest strength.” Chappell paid tribute to Cindi Lauper’s “True Colors” music video outfit, styled by Genesis Webb. She wore a bold custom newspaper clipping skirt made by Efrain Nava, paired with a sparkling beaded top, metallic gold Loubittons, and a crystal showgirl headpiece made by Manny T S Robertson. Many have deemed this look as ‘iconic’ and ‘one of her best’.
At the red carpet of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards in September 2024, some controversy with Roan broke out when she had an exchange with a photographer who yelled at her to “shut the f*** up” where she fired back the same phrase, angry and upset that a stranger would say this to her. She later explained that the red carpet was “overwhelming and scary,” and she would not tolerate being yelled at. Not too long after, at Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS World Tour movie premiere in Los Angeles on October 25, 2024, Roan, who was in attendance, confronted the photographer, stating that he had been disrespectful to her at the Grammy Awards. This event sparked controversy, with many agreeing that she needed some media training. On the contrary, at this event, an attendant made sure all the photographers knew what would happen if they were disrespectful to her, saying “OK, Chappell’s coming. No one will yell at her or she will leave. Everyone, be quiet, be nice, be smiling.” They obliged to her very simple request and got their photos in a respectful manner. Roan even spun for a photographer who politely asked. Chappell truly is an icon in the industry today and may even make lasting changes to red-carpet etiquette and how celebrities are treated and allow themselves to be treated by the paparazzi.
