2024 Films, and a Flash Back- A Decade of Iconic Movies:
2024 was certainly a year, and while we got lots of new things, among albums, artists, political candidates, viruses, the annual TikTok ban scare, and even a GTA 6 announcement, we also got a lot of new movies. It was a great year for film, and I am excited to share the top movies of the year, plus a few outliers that maybe weren’t as great as the others.
To rate and sort through the movies of this year, we can’t forget to call upon some memorable movies from previous years, such as the iconic Barbenheimer Summer in 2023, The Batman (starring Robert Pattinson) in 2022, or even throwing it back to 1999, with Ten Things I Hate About You. Here are some iconic movies from the past decade that we can compare the movies of 2024 to:
- Love, Rosie (Christian Ditter), The Maze Runner (Wes Ball), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Peter Ramsey), Me Before You (Thea Sharrock), Five Feet Apart (Justin Baldoni), The Power of the Dog (Jane Campion), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Joaquim de Santos), A Man Called Otto (Marc Forster), Barbie (Greta Gerwig), Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan), Saltburn (Emerald Fennell), Anyone But You (Will Gluck)
Films of 2024 (Kylie’s Version):
‘Great’ Movies:
- Wicked (Jon M. Chu): Absolutely stunning. No notes. Cannot wait for Part 2.
- Challengers (Luca Guadagnino): Such a good movie. I loved that the friendship prevailed over any relationship in the end and it was overall a great, intense movie.
- Despicable Me 4 (Chris Renaud): Gru and Lucy forever.
- We Live in Time (John Crowley): This is one of the most devastating movies I have ever watched and it destroyed me emotionally. It is also beautifully written and it has a lot of symbolism and heart-warming moments. 100% recommend giving it a watch.
‘Okay’ Movies:
- Gladiator II (Ridley Scott): If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Kidding….kidding. I honestly didn’t hate it, and it was a pretty good movie to watch, especially with Pedro Pascal and Paul Mescal on screen together, but I do love the first movie with all my heart and I could never put this one over the first one.
- Deadpool & Wolverine (Shawn Levy): Listen. Debatable and controversial, I get it, but I love Marvel and X-Men, so bringing back Gambit, Elektra, Blade, and Laura was amazing. I also enjoyed seeing Hugh Jackman as Wolverine again; I missed him a lot.
‘Ehhh’ Movies:
- Mean Girls (Samantha Jayne): There are either really good musical movies or really bad musical movies. I think you can assume yourself which one Mean Girls falls under. The only reason it is not awful is because of Reneé Rapp.
- Twisters (Lee Isaac Chung): If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it (part 2). I’m partially kidding. The movie wasn’t bad, but I also watched three movies with Glen Powell this year and I was getting sick of his cheesy smile. Overall, it wasn’t bad and I loved Daisy Edgar Jones’s countryish accent, but I do prefer the original 1996 version.
‘Awful’ Movies:
- Hot Frosty (Jerry Ciccoritti): I will refrain from saying what I actually want to say about this movie, and just say that it was definitely something.
- Babygirl (Halina Reijn): The description for this movie is literally, “A high-powered CEO puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern.” I do not think this requires much more debate. Love Nicole Kidman though.
- It Ends With Us (Justin Baldoni): No words. Absolutely none. Why are we turning awful books into awful movies?
2024 Films: A Conclusion
Overall, it wasn’t a bad year for film, and I cannot wait to see what we get for movies in the future, such as Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, Happy Gilmore 2, and worryingly, A Minecraft Movie.
