Last year, Ms. Santos joined the THS community as a history teacher. This year, she’s stepping up as the leading advisor of our schools’ Student Council. Read below to learn what she’s bringing to the table, her thoughts about the role, and what she’ll be looking for in this year’s batch of class leaders.
How do you feel about being the new student council advisor? Is there anything in particular you’re looking forward to or are worried about?
I’m very excited to be the new student council advisor. I’m looking forward to– but also worried about– Homecoming, because there’s a lot involved. I’m also worried about elections, because I think more people need to volunteer! [Hint hint.]
What skills and talents are you excited to bring to the table through this role?
Party-planning!* I’m also good at coming up with ideas for things like fundraising.
*Note from the reporter: Ms. Santos does in fact throw fabulous parties. Her Hobbit-themed spread on the last day of school was quite the marvel.
Have you had any student council experience from your education? What was that like for you, and what did you learn?
Yes. I was the Vice President of the Commonwealth Honors Program at Salem State University and did fundraising through that. I learned a lot about how important connections are within a community, and that you need to take into account what people want to see in a fundraiser in order to be successful. Like, if I were to sell you textbooks as a fundraiser, we’re not going to make any money!
Why do you think student council is important and something worth participating in?
I think it’s a good introduction to the way that our democracy works. It’s also good to give you [students] a voice and responsibility.
What qualities do you believe are necessary to be a valuable and productive member of the THS Student Council?
I would say responsibility, for sure. Also the ability to collaborate with others and work towards a common goal… and a little bit of ambition sprinkled in!
Lastly, do you have any advice for those running for a council position this year?
Be honest and focus on what you can bring to the table instead of the failings of past years.
