Every year, the week leading up to our Homecoming dance is full of themes and games. This year, Tiverton High School went all out. After school each day, there was a different game that was class versus class, and some games were played during lunches based on teams. Each day of the week had a different clothing theme that led up to the last day (school colors), which is for Pep Rally and the Homecoming Game! Pep Rally took place during the last period of school, and right after school was our annual Powderpuff game. Later on that night, we had a bonfire and our Homecoming football game. Spirit Week has always been a fun and engaging way to show Tiger Pride!
The traditions for our Homecoming week are very memorable. Our school has always had a particular way of showing school spirit. Every day there is a class versus class battle after school. Monday was a pie-eating contest that the seniors won, Tuesday was the hula hoop pass that the juniors won, Wednesday was “human hungry hungry hippos” which the juniors won, Thursday was the water relay that the junior and seniors settled on a tie for, and Friday was Powerpuff, which the seniors won. These games are meant for some friendly competition but often get extremely competitive.
Besides the after-school games, we also had games that took place during the Pep Rally. The Pep Rally showcased the fall sports teams with fun skits that each team came up with. We also had musical chairs, a dance-off, and the most anticipated game, tug of war.
Besides the games and skits, Pep Rally also includes the class bleachers. Each class has its own set of bleachers to decorate the day before however they see fit. This tradition also brings on some friendly competition, seeing which class can decorate the bleachers the best.
After talking to a couple of teachers who went here, they mentioned that there used to be so much more school spirit during the week and mostly during the Pep Tally. They said that during the Pep Rally, it was so loud and busy that you could barely think, and that they miss this kind of school spirit. Due to our school’s small population, it makes it hard to live up to what it once was, but spirit week still remains an exciting event for the students.
This year’s spirit week themes were Monday; Rhyme without a Reason, Tuesday; class colors, Wednesday; class theme, and Thursday; soccer mom vs. barbeque dad. The class colors were staff wore black and green, seniors wore red white, and blue, juniors wore pink, sophomores wore purple, and the freshmen wore yellow. For class theme days the themes were super/sporty staff, Adam Sandler seniors, jungle juniors, sleepy sophomores, and fancy freshmen. This year’s Spirit Week theme was fun and a good amount of people dressed up. I asked a couple of people who they thought had the best costume and many people thought that out of the students, Artemis and Brooke Polofsky’s rhyme-without-a-reason, Believer and Julius Caesar costumes were the best of the best. People also thought that the whole science department dressing as Power Rangers for “super staff” had the best costumes out of the teachers. Overall, this year’s Homecoming spirit week was very successful!
