Whether you are looking to apply to colleges, or looking into different trades and careers, the College and Career Fair is the perfect place to look around. Welcoming all for free, on Wednesday, October 9th, between 6:00 and 7:00 pm, Tiverton High School is hosting the largest annual college and career fair in the East Bay. Representatives from over sixty colleges and career options will staff tables where you can talk to them about a variety of opportunities and possibilities.
To get an inside look at the club fair, I interviewed Mrs. McGuire, one of the guidance counselors at Tiverton High School that played a major role in helping plan the event. Mrs. McGuire preached the importance of exploring new possibilities for the future and keeping an open mind. Around two-hundred people attend this fair, ranging from local students to families from Southeastern Massachusetts, and the event is the perfect way to network with people that you may otherwise not have the chance to meet. Mrs. McGuire and the entire guidance department play an essential role in setting up the fair, as they are responsible for sending out the countless invitations to colleges and post-secondary options for students to consider. Although this seems very stressful, Mrs. McGuire said it was “not that stressful because they [the guidance department] are very excited about offering this opportunity”. She highlighted that the event should not be missed, and some of the colleges included: Bryant University, Endicott College, Keen State, Suffolk University, Sacred Heart, US Naval Academy, University of New Hampshire, and University of Rhode Island. They also included some post-secondary options, such as: New England Tech, IYRS School of Technology and Trade, MTTI Career and Technical school, Local 51 Pipefitters, the Tiverton Fire Department, and the Tiverton Police Department.
Nowadays, there are countless colleges to attend, and many careers to pursue. This can lead to some confusion among high school students about what they want to do, but Mrs. McGuire assures how often students that do not know what they want to pursue after high school attend the College and Career Fair. Not only will this help clear up confusion for students who are undecided, but it will also give them new opportunities to meet with colleges and careers that may interest them. Mrs. McGuire said “Even if you don’t know what you want to go to college for, it is a good opportunity to talk to reps to gain a broader knowledge of all the opportunities there are out in the world”.
The one request that Mrs. McGuire makes is for all students at Tiverton High School to repost this on social media and spread the word. The goal of this is to show to people from other towns that they are welcome and encouraged to come to the fair. Once again, it is from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Tiverton High School gymnasium on Wednesday, October 9th. Hope to see you at the College and Career Fair!
