Mr. Schreiner is the head of the Art Department at Tiverton Middle School and has recently been awarded Teacher of the Year by the district. In past years, he also received the Golden Apple Award from Patrice Woods. Tiverton Public Schools held a gathering for the district staff in preparation for the school year. The event was filled with energy, inspiration, and a strong sense of teamwork. A highlight was the celebration of Steve Schreiner, District Teacher of the Year, for his dedication to students and the school community. Tiverton Middle School, a remarkable figure stands out—not just as an art teacher, but as an inspiring mentor who is passionate and dedicated. Steve Schreiner has been awarded Teacher of the Year, recognizing his commitment to nurturing students inside the classroom and on the athletic field. His education journey, however, is a story of chance and purpose.
Mr. Schreiner didn’t always plan on becoming a teacher. He began as a Fine Arts major in college, but was unsure how to use his artistic talent. It wasn’t until a mentor, Professor Dante Vena, introduced him to art education that Steve discovered his true calling. “I have now been an art educator for over 25 years. Connecting with kids and helping them be their best is the most rewarding experience,” he shares. Mr. Schreiner had always had the belief of being there for his students, especially if they needed one-on-one help.
Every teacher faces challenges; for Mr. Schreiner, these moments become growth opportunities. “Every few years, there’s one really tough class. Life isn’t meant to be easy, so I embrace the challenge,” he explains. He adapts his strategies and fosters open communication. With an open door and a listening ear, he provides encouragement and support, knowing that sometimes a small act can make a huge difference. In Mr. Schreiner’s art classroom, creativity is more important than conformity. “It’s art; everyone doesn’t have to have the same answer to the problem. All I ask is that you try your best,” he emphasizes. This philosophy shows his commitment to creating an inclusive environment where students feel valued, regardless of their backgrounds or skill levels.
Steve constantly looks for innovative ways to engage his students. He prefers to work alongside them, demonstrating the lessons he teaches: “I will never ask my athletes or students to do something I wouldn’t do myself.” This hands-on approach builds respect and fosters a deeper understanding of the material. He stays proactive about his professional development by reading and researching, ensuring his knowledge and techniques grow over time.
As a dedicated coach for cross-country and track and field, Steve brings the same energy and enthusiasm he displays in the classroom. His daily life showcases his commitment; he wakes up at 4 AM to fit in his training and preparation, managing his responsibilities with remarkable effectiveness. He values teamwork, stating, “As a coach, we are a family. We build each other up, support one another, and celebrate our successes together.” Steve’s coaching revolves around leading by example and emphasizing the importance of teamwork. In endurance sports like cross country, he fosters camaraderie among athletes by promoting positivity and support. “It has become contagious,” he notes, highlighting how a supportive environment motivates young athletes to excel. On his coaching journey, Steve fondly recalls a pivotal moment from almost two decades ago, when he was coaching Varsity Boys Soccer at Rogers High School. With little experience on his initial roster, he focused on fitness and teamwork, proving that determination can outweigh skill. “We ended the season with a losing record, but we could hold our own against any opponents,” he remembers. This season turned out to be a foundational experience for many athletes, helping them understand the true essence of growth and resilience.
Steve Schreiner’s impact as an educator and coach extends far beyond the awards he has received. He embodies the qualities that define a great teacher—energy, dedication, and an unwavering spirit of support. As he continues to inspire the next generation, his story serves as a reminder of the powerful role teachers can play in their students’ lives.
