What is PHN? The Peer Helping Network is a club of people in the school whose goals are to make everyone feel welcome at Tiverton Highschool. High school is not always easy, and PHN is a group of people who want to help make it a little bit easier (and have fun too!). They do fun activities and spirit weeks to raise awareness for different topics.
“Start With Hello” week is a spirit week put together by PHN to raise awareness and spread kindness in remembrance of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting. During that shooting the lives of 26 people were ended, 20 children around the ages of 6 and 7 years old, and 6 adult staff members. Ms Urban, the advisor for PHN, works hard to make the week successful. “Start With Hello” is also used as a way to let highschoolers meet new people, with fun activities and themes for each day of the week it allows students to break out of their shell a bit and maybe make some new friends too! “Start With Hello” week is a way to bring everyone together to do something meaningful, not only honoring the Sandy Hook School and the victims of the shooting in 2012, but also to show our tiger pride!
Ms Kane says “The upperclassmen are like mentors and leaders, it’s awesome to watch the students grow and mature.” Ms Kane and the other members work hard to make this whole club successful and fun for everyone involved! PHN offers a safe space for students to have fun, share ideas, make new friends, and feel included. Everyone deserves to feel like they have a place where they can be themselves. ”The students make other people feel welcome, it makes us feel so good to see students doing good” Ms Kane added. If you feel out of place, or want to connect with your peers, PHN is the place for you!!
