At THS, athletes have become more than just outstanding teens on the field, through VAASA (Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse), athlete students act as role models for younger generations while being exceptional athletes. VAASA embodies a mission that is crucial in today’s high school culture where substance use has become more and more common everyday. The club aims to raise awareness about dangers of substance use, and how it affects both athletic performance and one’s overall being. VAASA is not just about being in a club, it is about making a true difference in today’s society by shaping the future of the world. Members of VAASA have the opportunities to attend conferences with other teens in RI, and also actively participate in campaigns to prevent substance use such as bulletin boards around the school, speeches, and also participating in local events such as trunk or treat.
Substance use at a young age is highly harmful. It can directly impact the still developing brain, making it harder for students to concentrate, learn, and make good decisions. Psychologically, young people who abuse substances have the tendency of experiencing depression, anxiety, and other psychological diagnosis. It can have a deep effect on someone’s future life, affecting their financial life, relationships (both platonic and romantic), and careers. Avoiding substances can help people stay healthy, safe and focused on their goals and aspirations.
