March is Music in our Schools month. Music in our Schools Month, now a nationwide celebration, began as a single statewide advocacy day in New York on March 14, 1973, and evolved into a month-long celebration in 1985. During this month, there are also All-State music performances, in musical groups like Bands, Choruses, and Strings. To get into these said groups, students must audition for their all-state group at local schools. A few students from THS auditioned and got in.
There were two chorus members who took part, one of them being Senior Hannah Lazar. After asking her some questions, she stated that, “Getting into all-state felt really special, and getting to be with the best of the best was an honor.” She went on to say, “I definitely wish I had done it other years to get even more experience and to perform with other really talented musicians.” Hannah performed in the mixed senior show choir at the VETS this past month, and I couldn’t be more proud!
I also talked to junior Norah Winslow who plays the trumpet, and senior Cooper Thomas who plays the cello. Norah had stated that she’s done it for the past 4 years and loves it, “It is a great way to get exposure to new music, styles of conducting, and meet some amazing people”. Cooper also stated that it was something he would have done for years if he could– reflecting on the mix of work and fun it is to pull off performing with some of the best kids in the state. Keeping music in our schools alive is important– music not only benefits students’ learning, but can culturally unite people. Congratulations to the students who got in and enjoy keeping music prominent in our schools!
