Two weeks ago, I had a (not so) great opportunity to watch Emilia Perez on Netflix. I watched it for my entire two hour flight to Chicago, which is exactly how long Emilia Perez is. However, I wanted to watch this movie because I thought to myself: What makes this movie so much greater than Wicked? Win so many more awards than Wicked? What is the allure?
Summary
Going in, I didn’t even know what this movie was about. If you do not know, it is about a drug lord in Mexico wanting to leave behind their family, and their dangerous world by transitioning into a woman to look unrecognizable. The drug lord becomes Emilia Perez, a philanthropist and savior who searches for missing people all across Mexico. However, the majority of the missing people were killed or kidnapped by her old gang. Before they transitioned from male to female in all aspects, the drug lord employs a lawyer to do all the research on gender-affirming surgery.
Opinion
The movie was simply a waste of two hours. There were so many times I couldn’t even fathom what was happening since I was so confused. Furthermore, the movie is supposed to take place in Mexico, but all of the actors are speaking Spaniard Spanish instead of having a Mexican dialect. Also, the directors were FRENCH! On top of that, the writers used transgender stereotypes throughout the movie, which made it cliche. The director has also received controversy for the racist, Islamophobic, and otherwise offensive tweets he has previously made.
Conclusion
Don’t watch it. Don’t give them the views.
